315 Harbor View, Rockwall - The Design

Given its lake location, this house was meant to be shared with friends and families. The   program for the house called for a comfortable family home with multi-use rooms (study, attic loft) easily convertible to additional sleeping quarters for visitors. The house is to gear for indoor-outdoor living, and to have a traditional exterior that won't go stale in a few years.  I revisited the colonial revival style which worked well with the University Park house to reflect this house's family-centricity and for a classic look. The exterior finish can be red brick with painted shingles like the University Park house, or it can be stone and shingles, or even white painted bricks and shingles.

The house wraps around the existing pecan tree in front and has 3 covered porches to entice you outside. The front porch is good for watching the kids climb the pecan tree, or visiting with the neighbors. The 2 rear porches are great anytime for taking in lake views and to enjoy the lake breeze. Perfect for a hammock or two for those lazy summer days

The interior layout is designed for flexible living and entertaining. The downstairs study and the 3rd floor loft (with a great view of the lake) can become sleeping quarters in a pinch to accommodate visiting families and friends. The first floor has an open plan with a two-story high living room to echo the expansive lake views. I did break from the local tradition to have the master bedroom upstairs with this house. My first design had a first floor master suite but the small lot made the first floor not as good  for entertaining.  Moving the master suite upstairs gained more privacy and better views. I also added an attic loft over the master bedroom so each of the owners will have his/her own space. Togetherness is great but having one's own space can be godsend sometimes, especially for couples like us who don't always agree on the decors and/or tidiness.
